Family members of Bangladeshi-origin American police officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in a shooting, met with Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at a New York hotel on Monday night (local time). During the meeting, Yunus condoled with the family and presented a crest as a mark of respect for the fallen officer.
Those present included Didarul’s father Mohammad Abdur Rob, mother Minara Begum, two sons Ayhan Islam and Azhan Islam, brother Kamrul Hasan, nephew Adian Hasan, sister Nadima Begum, and uncle Ahmed Jamal Uddin. Also attending were Akhter Hossen, Member Secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), and Joint Convener Dr. Tasnim Zara, who accompanied the Chief Adviser, according to a post on the Chief Adviser’s official Facebook page on Tuesday.
Expressing his condolences, Yunus said: “I read about the incident in the newspapers and was shocked. I couldn’t understand how it happened. I saw on TV that thousands of people had turned out in New York to pay their final respects. He received immense grief, respect, and love from people. When planning our visit to New York, we felt it was essential to meet with you.”
Family members described Didarul Islam as a responsible and well-respected officer of the New York Police Department (NYPD). He joined the force in 2021 and was serving at the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. He is survived by two children.
Didarul Islam was shot dead on July 28 on Park Avenue in Manhattan by a gunman who had entered a multi-storey corporate building and opened fire indiscriminately before taking his own life. According to his family, Didarul was shot while risking his life to stop the attacker, and his body bore eight to ten bullet wounds.
